What is a "panger"?

Panger

An essential accessory for a fisherman embarking on a sea voyage: a 'panger'. Or is it 'paander', 'pander', 'panjer', or 'pangel'? The synonyms are numerous and vary from region to region, but they all stem from the Latin word ‘panarium’, meaning breadbasket. In the context of fishing, the term refers to the round or oval basket with two lids and a handle in which fishermen carried and stored their personal food supplies aboard the ship. On the return journey, the empty basket would be refilled, this time with the part of the catch the fisherman was entitled to, alongside his wage – the so-called ‘share fish’.
